Dr Kelvin Lau is an academic and photographer based in Melbourne and the South Gippsland region in Victoria. He previously worked as a medical practitioner in general family practice, and as a consulting primary health clinician for several Headspace youth mental health centres in the Melbourne metropolitan region.
Kelvin completed a PhD project at the University of Melbourne in 2017, titled “Understanding mental distress in young people from a migrant background in Australia through photo-interviewing”. In this research project he explored the application of visual narrative methodology for discovering how mental distress experiences were constructed and understood by young people from transcultural backgrounds, and how these understandings impacted upon their engagement with formal mental health services. In 2015 he worked in collaboration with Headspace, ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions, and Centre for Contemporary Photography Victoria to deliver a youth engagement program titled “Exploring Emotion and Memory through Photography”.
As a ‘third culture kid’ born in Hong Kong but raised in Australia, Kelvin is interested in further investigating the application of creative photographic practice as a reflective meaning-making process within the context of mental health related experience and service engagement. He also has an interest in exploring the role of photography as a medium for communicating and researching personal lived experience in a digital ‘post-truth’ world. His most recent creative works explore and challenge colonial conventions in landscape photography, and was featured in the Monash Gallery of Art’s 2020 Bowness Photography Prize exhibition.
