Ella Dilkes-Frayne is a postdoctoral researcher in the School of Sociology at the Australian National University, Canberra. Ella was awarded her PhD (Psychological Sciences) from Monash University, Melbourne, in 2016. Building upon her background in criminology, Ella’s PhD research drew on human geography, medical anthropology and science and technology studies to explore the social and spatial contexts of young people’s party drug consumption. Since then, she has worked at Monash University’s School of Sociology, in partnership with the National Drug Research Institute, on research addressing people’s experiences of drug use and addiction, and at Monash University’s School of Psychological Sciences regarding the use of online counselling by family members affected by a relative’s alcohol and other drug use in partnership with Turning Point.
Ella’s current research takes a broader focus on sociology of health and medicine, examining the expansion of the concept of behavioural addictions, social interventions to improve empathy and role-taking, and work addressing gender and feminism in the social sciences. Ella has a strong interest in
reducing stigma and discrimination to improve the lives of people living in difficult social conditions, particularly those who use illicit drugs or experience mental health issues. Her research takes an in- depth qualitative and ethnographic approach, informed by actor-network theory and new materialism, to explore the highly situational nature of action and its effects.
